ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The next time you add a teenage driver to your auto insurance policy, get ready to pay up.

In fact, in some states, your premium could more than double. That's according to new numbers released overnight by InsuranceQuotes.com. The study examined the economic impact of adding a teen driver to a family's existing car insurance policy.

Nationwide, auto insurance premiums increase on average 84-percent or about $2,000 when a teenager is added.

In Missouri, the increase is 91-percent. In Illinois, it's 90-percent. Arkansas had the greatest average premium increase of 116-percent. The reason? Because Arkansas is rural and wide open.

"We know that in rural accidents, they tend to be more devastating," said Laura Adams, spokeswoman for InsuranceQuotes.com. "There are more deaths associated with accidents in rural areas."

The state where it's the cheapest to add a teen driver to an existing auto policy is Hawaii. The increase is just 18-percent. Hawaii doesn't allow insurance providers to look at age, gender or driving experience when determining premiums.
